Abstract
Background/purpose: Early childhood caries is a noticeable public problem in Taiwan. To preserve primary teeth, when deep caries are found, vital pulp therapy like pulpotomy will be performed. Traditionally Formocresol(FC) is used for pulpotomy and but the toxicity of FC has aroused controversies about the usage. MTA was developed in later time and showed multiple advantages over FC and may be very suitable as a substitute material in primary teeth pulpotomy. Materials and methods: This retrospective study assembled follow-up records of 90 teeth of 4-9 years-old patient ubdergone primary molar pulpotomy from Taipei Medical University Hospital. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were done to understand the success of different materials (FC, Savden MTA, Proroot MTA). Result: The results revealed high clinical success (FC=100%, ProRoot MTA=100% and SavDen MTA=100% at 6 months; FC=93.33%, ProRoot MTA=100% and SavDen MTA=96.67% at 12 months) and for radiographic success the results were different in percentage (FC=96.67%,ProRoot MTA=100% and SavDen MTA=100% at 6 months, FC=90%,ProRoot MTA=100% and SavDen MTA=100% at 12 months). Dentine bridge formation was significantly higher in SavDen group and PDL widening was found more in ProRoot group with significance. Conclusion: ProRoot MTA and SavDen MTA can be taken as suitable alternatives for in primary molar pulpotomy.
